‘ I have found that books can transfer kids to another place.’ Judith has been offering as a bedside reader at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust given that 2003. After retiring from mentor, Judith wished to continue to use her storytelling skills to assist kids who are improperly. ‘I had always delighted in reading to the children in school at the end of the day. You might see them noticeably unwind and be soaked up by the story. I thought this might also use to kids in hospital. I volunteer on the children’s oncology wards in the hospital. I have experienced the diversion checking out a story can do to support the staff. The children are little heroes. To witness their guts is a privilege.’ Thank you for your empathy and care Judith. Mark joined the NHS in his 30s after leaving his family’s organization with no formal credentials, however a drive to make a distinction. He began as a mental health support employee and went on to train as a general nurse. He qualified at 37 and invested the next twenty years gradually climbing up the ladder. He even went back to work in the same medical facility ward he was born in, taking on the role of ward manager. Today, he’s the Associate Director of Nursing at Whipps Cross University Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust. ‘ I attempted to change off a bedside light and seemed like something wasn’t best with me. I knew quickly it was a stroke.’ In July 2023, after an active holiday kayaking and walking, Bob suddenly had a stroke. He was flown by air ambulance to University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, where he invested 4 weeks rehabilitating. ‘I used the health club regularly and did (NROL)’. NROL is a group rehabilitation program for individuals who have had a stroke or have other neurological conditions. ‘I had a structured schedule which gave me something to anticipate each week – socially, psychologically and emotionally.’ Bob thanked NHS staff for ‘the fantastic assistance’ and the continuous physiotherapy he got. Well done Bob and great work group! Early recognition of stroke signs can conserve lives. If you see somebody with any indications or symptoms of a stroke, keep in mind to Act F.A.S.T. ‘ Working together with nurses and seeing the difference they made inspired me to think, ‘I might do that!” Meet Sharon, a sexual health nurse and non-medical prescriber who began her nursing journey in 1985 at the Royal Liverpool Teaching Hospital. In 2010 she signed up with Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust and continues to serve clients in Hertfordshire. ‘I loved assisting individuals and discovering about the body, so nursing simply felt right.’ Sharon reflects. Sharon has worked in male infertility, menopause, miscarriage and colposcopy among others, revealing the wide variety of areas in which nurses make a difference. ‘Truly, I can’t think about an area where nurses do not make an effect in some type,’ Sharon confesses. On why her role is unique, Sharon discusses, ‘The care, kindness, and compassion we bring make the nursing function special. As patient supporters, we assist ensure their journey is supported, informed, and really significant.’ There are more than 50 different kinds of nursing roles available in the NHS.
